Licensing Objectives

The Licensing Act and the Gambling Act are different to other forms of licensing legislation in that there are statutory licensing objectives that the Licensing Authority and each licence holder must aim to promote.

For the Licensing Act, these objectives are ;

  • The Prevention of Crime and Disorder

  • The Protection of Children from Harm

  • Public Safety

  • The Prevention of Public Nuisance

Interestingly, no one objective is more important than the other , so there is sometimes a balancing act between them.

For the Gambling Act, the objectives are different ;

  1. preventing gambling from being a source of crime or disorder, being associated with crime or disorder or being used to support crime,

  2. ensuring that gambling is conducted in a fair and open way, and

  3. protecting children and other vulnerable persons from being harmed or exploited by gambling.
